Self-Harm:

Why Self-Harm?

While I offer a wide range of services in the Isle of Man and on-line via Zoom, the area I have a particular specialty in is self-harm.

This is primarily due to my own experience as a parent who was completely blindsided by self-harm in my family. I know that feeling of helplessness and my objective is to help families get through what is a very difficult condition to deal with.

Increased Prevalence

Self-harm among young children and teens has become increasingly prevalent, with many resorting to behaviours like cutting, burning, or hitting themselves as a means to cope with overwhelming emotions. Studies show a worrying rise in self-injury among youth, often linked to issues such as anxiety, depression, bullying, or trauma and the Isle of Man is no exception with reported self-harm rates higher than ever before.

The Dangers

The dangers of self-harm are significant, extending beyond the immediate physical injuries. It can lead to severe infections, permanent scars, and in some cases, escalate to suicidal ideation or attempts. The emotional toll on the individual is profound, often deepening feelings of shame, isolation, and despair.

Impact on the Family

The impact of self-harm extends to families as well. Parents and siblings may feel helpless, confused, or guilty, struggling to understand why a loved one would engage in such harmful behaviour. The secrecy surrounding self-harm can further strain relationships, as many children and teens go to great lengths to hide their actions. They might wear long sleeves, even in warm weather, avoid situations where they might have to expose their injuries, and become adept at concealing the tools they use. This secrecy often delays intervention, making it harder for families to provide the support needed.

How Can I Help?

NLP therapy offers a valuable approach to addressing self-harm by targeting the underlying thought patterns and emotional triggers that drive this behaviour. Through NLP, young people can learn to reframe negative beliefs, develop healthier coping strategies, and enhance their emotional resilience.

Techniques in NLP focus on changing how individuals perceive and respond to their emotions, helping them break the cycle of self-injury. By fostering a stronger sense of self-worth and empowering them to handle stress and emotional pain more effectively, NLP therapy can play a crucial role in healing not only the individual but also in restoring harmony within families affected by self-harm.

I offer 1-2-1 sessions in the Isle of Man, my practice is located in a private and discreet setting, contact me today to start the journey to recovery from self-harm.
